Booking & Availability

How do I make a booking?

Send us an enquiry via the contact page or give Nico a call on +64 274 767 067. There are no online instant-bookings — we handle everything personally so we can make sure the right motorhome is matched to your trip.

Is there a minimum rental period?

Yes — minimum 5 nights off-season, and 13 nights during high season (November to February). If you're planning a summer trip, get in touch early as availability fills up quickly.

How far in advance should I book?

As early as possible — especially for peak summer dates (Christmas through January) and school holidays. We have a small fleet, so dates go fast. Off-season bookings are generally more flexible.

What is your cancellation policy?

Cancellations made more than 60 days before the hire start date receive a full refund. Between 30 and 60 days, a 50% refund applies. Within 30 days of the start date, no refund is available. All conditions are detailed in the rental agreement.

Driver Requirements

What licence do I need?

A full, valid car driver's licence held for at least two years. Our motorhomes are all under 6,000kg so a standard car licence is all that's required — no special category needed. If your licence isn't in English, you'll need an International Driving Permit or an official translation.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes — drivers must be 25 or older. This applies to all named drivers on the rental agreement.

Can I add additional drivers?

Yes. Additional drivers must meet the same age and licence requirements and must be listed on the rental agreement before the hire begins. Let us know at the time of booking.

What's Included

What's included in the hire price?

Everything you need to get on the road — bedding, pillows, towels, full kitchen kit (pots, pans, crockery, cutlery), standard insurance, 24/7 roadside assistance, and unlimited kilometres. You turn up, load your bags, and go. See the full motorhome inventory for the complete list.

Are beach towels included?

Bath towels are included, but beach towels are not — you'll need to bring your own or pick some up.

Is insurance included?

Yes, standard insurance is included. There is an excess of $2,500 in the event of an at-fault accident. You are responsible for damage to third-party property and for any damage resulting from use of the vehicle in breach of the rental agreement (e.g. driving on restricted roads).

Driving & Roads

Is it hard to drive a motorhome?

Not at all. If you're comfortable behind the wheel of a car, you'll adapt quickly. We do a thorough handover at pickup so you understand the vehicle before you leave. New Zealand roads can be narrow in places — just take your time and enjoy the pace.

Are there any roads I can't drive on?

Some unsealed (gravel) roads are not covered under the rental agreement. We'll go through this at handover and it's detailed in the rental agreement. As a general rule, stick to sealed roads unless a gravel road is specifically noted as suitable for motorhomes.

Can I take the motorhome to both islands?

Absolutely. The Interislander ferry runs between Wellington and Picton and accommodates motorhomes. Book ferry tickets directly with Interislander — we recommend booking well in advance over the summer. One-way hires are available if you want to start in Auckland and finish in Christchurch, or vice versa.

Camping & Freedom Camping

Can I freedom camp?

Yes. All Travelway motorhomes are self-contained certified, meaning they have an onboard toilet and wastewater storage — so they're legal for freedom camping in permitted areas. We'll walk you through everything at pickup. The Campermate app is a great tool for finding permitted spots.

Do I need to book campsites in advance?

During summer (November to February) popular holiday parks in places like Queenstown, Wānaka, and the Bay of Islands fill up fast. We recommend booking powered sites in advance if you're travelling over peak dates. Off-season and freedom camping spots are much more flexible.

Pets & Extras

Are pets allowed?

Yes — your pet is welcome. Let us know when you enquire so we can note it in the agreement. A $150 cleaning fee applies.

What optional extras are available?

We offer a range of add-ons including a gas BBQ, paddle board, portable WiFi (300GB), Nespresso machine, GPS navigation, camping table and chairs, and child car seats. Prices vary — ask when you enquire and we'll include them with your quote.

On the Road

What if something goes wrong?

Call us. 24/7 support and nationwide roadside assistance are included with every hire — the contact number is in your rental documents. You're never on your own out there. If it's a mechanical issue we'll arrange repairs or a replacement as quickly as possible.

What fuel does the motorhome use?

All motorhomes run on diesel. The vehicle is provided with a full tank and must be returned full. If returned with less fuel than it was handed over with, the cost of refuelling will be deducted from your bond.

Return & Bond

How does the bond work?

A $2,500 bond is held at the start of your hire and returned after inspection on return. The bond may be used to cover any damage, cleaning costs, or fuel shortfall not already covered by insurance.

What condition does the motorhome need to be returned in?

The same condition it was handed over in — clean inside and out, with tanks emptied and fuel full. We're reasonable about normal wear and general travel dirt. What we do charge for is interior mess that requires a deep clean, damage, and anything that was avoidable.
