These are ideas, not itineraries. We share these routes because our customers ask about them — not because we plan trips. Where you go, when you stop, and how long you stay is entirely up to you. That is the whole point of a motorhome.

North Island & South Island
New Zealand packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into a small country. Below are some of the routes our customers return to again and again — scenic drives, coastal loops, alpine crossings. All suited to motorhome travel.
North Island
7 – 10 days recommended
Northland & Bay of Islands
Follow State Highway 1 north from Auckland to the Bay of Islands — one of New Zealand's most iconic stretches of coastline. Pohutukawa-lined bays, history, and some of the country's best fishing. The Cape Reinga loop is an easy day trip from Pahia.
7 – 10 days recommended
Coromandel & East Cape
A loop east of Auckland taking in the Coromandel Peninsula, the thermal wonders of Rotorua, and the remote East Cape — the first place on earth to see the sunrise. Roads are winding but that is half the pleasure.
5 – 8 days recommended
Central Plateau & Tongariro
From Taupo head south through the volcanic plateau to Tongariro National Park — home to the famous Alpine Crossing. Continue to Wellington for the ferry crossing if you are heading south. A dramatic, memorable drive.
6 – 9 days recommended
Hawke's Bay & Wairarapa
The sunny east coast of the North Island offers a slower pace — art deco Napier, world-class vineyards, coastal cliffs, and the dramatic Wairarapa before dropping into Wellington. Great in autumn when the light is golden.
South Island
14 – 21 days recommended
South Island Grand Loop
The classic. From Christchurch down the east coast through Oamaru and Dunedin, across to Queenstown and Fiordland, up the West Coast glacier country, and back over Arthur's Pass. New Zealand at its most dramatic, best covered without rushing.
14 – 18 days recommended
Auckland to Christchurch
Take the ferry from Wellington to Picton and work your way south. The Marlborough Sounds, Nelson and the Abel Tasman, the Kaikōura coast and Canterbury Plains. A one-way hire means you start in one city and finish in the other.
7 – 10 days recommended
Nelson & Abel Tasman
New Zealand's sunniest region. Cruise the Marlborough wine country, explore the Abel Tasman coastline by kayak or water taxi, and base yourself in Nelson for a few days. A relaxed, beautiful loop ideal for families.
8 – 12 days recommended
Queenstown, Wānaka & Fiordland
A concentrated loop through New Zealand's most spectacular alpine and fiord scenery. Queenstown for energy, Wānaka for calm, and Fiordland for pure wilderness. The drive to Milford Sound alone is worth the trip.
Before you go
A few things worth knowing
Not itinerary planning — just practical things that make motorhome travel in New Zealand smoother.
Don't try to rush it
New Zealand roads are scenic but often narrow and winding. The recommended day ranges on these routes reflect a relaxed pace — driving 3 to 4 hours a day leaves plenty of time to stop, walk, and actually enjoy where you are.
Freedom camping is an option
All Travelway motorhomes are self-contained certified. This means you can freedom camp in designated areas — giving you flexibility that campervans and tents can't always match. Check the Campermate app for permitted spots near you.
Weather changes fast
Particularly in Fiordland, the West Coast, and alpine areas. Build flexibility into your plans — if the weather closes in at Milford Sound, the drive back through the Homer Tunnel is still something to see. Pack layers whatever the season.
Book campsites over summer
November through February is peak season. Popular spots in Queenstown, Wānaka, and the Bay of Islands fill up fast. Book powered sites in advance if you plan to be on the road over the summer holidays.
Height & weight limits
Some scenic roads and carparks have height restrictions. Our motorhomes are typically 3.0 – 3.2m high. Check signage on approach — it is noted on most NZ tourist routes where it matters. Bridges on minor roads can also have weight limits.
Useful apps & tools
Campermate shows freedom camping sites, dump stations, and water points. Rankers Camping NZ is good for holiday park reviews. Google Maps works well but can suggest roads not suited to motorhomes — always cross-check on NZTA's road info.
